KNODOS 58mm Blind Espresso Shaker with Walnut Lid — Magnetic Dosing Cup, Coffee Grounds Distribution Tool
The KNODOS 58mm Blind Espresso Shaker is a grounds distribution tool with a magnetic base and handcrafted walnut lid. Grind coffee into the shaker, cap it with the walnut lid, and shake for 5–8 seconds — the magnetic base then locks onto your 58mm portafilter basket while the grounds drop in evenly. Shaking breaks static-held clumps, redistributes fines, and homogenizes the dose for more even extraction. Fits E61, Gaggia, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, Rancilio, and Breville.
How Blind Shaking Improves Extraction
Every grinder produces some degree of particle separation during grinding. Fines exit at different times than coarse particles, static causes clumping, and the dose lands unevenly in whatever vessel catches it. If you transfer these unevenly distributed grounds straight into the portafilter, the puck has inconsistent density. Water finds the path of least resistance and channels through weak spots instead of flowing evenly through the entire bed. Blind shaking solves this at the source — before the grounds ever enter the portafilter. Five to eight seconds of gentle shaking redistributes the fines among the larger particles, breaks static-held clumps, and creates a more uniform mixture. The coffee enters the portafilter already well-mixed.
Magnetic Dosing Cup
The built-in magnet at the base of the shaker attaches securely to your 58mm portafilter basket. Place it on top, the magnet centers and holds it, and the grounds drop into the basket with no mess. The magnetic connection means you can flip the shaker and portafilter together during transfer without the shaker falling off.
Smooth Anodized Aluminum Interior
The shaker body is machined from anodized aluminum with a polished-smooth interior. Coffee grounds slide off the walls cleanly — no sticking, no retention. Lightweight, durable, and easy to rinse clean.
Walnut Lid
Solid walnut lid seals the shaker during shaking. Handcrafted from the same walnut used across KNODOS tampers, distributors, and portafilters. Removes easily for dosing, fits snugly during shaking.
Espresso Workflow with Blind Shaker — Step by Step
Grind coffee directly into the blind shaker.
Place the walnut lid on top.
Shake gently for 5–8 seconds using a circular or side-to-side motion.
Set the shaker on your 58mm portafilter — the magnet locks into the basket.
Flip and release the grounds into the basket.
Use a WDT tool to fine-tune distribution inside the basket.
Tamp and extract.
The blind shaker sits between your grinder and your portafilter in the workflow — it replaces grinding directly into the basket.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a blind shaker and a dosing cup?
A dosing cup catches grounds for weighing and pouring. A blind shaker is designed specifically for shaking — the closed bottom, smooth interior, and secure lid let you shake grounds to redistribute fines and break clumps before transferring to the portafilter. It can also be used as a dosing cup.
Does blind shaking replace WDT?
No — they work together. Blind shaking pre-mixes the grounds before they enter the portafilter. WDT fine-tunes distribution inside the portafilter after dosing. Use both for the best results: shake, dose, WDT, tamp.
How long should I shake?
5–8 seconds of gentle circular or side-to-side motion. Over-shaking causes particle separation — heavy particles settle while fines rise, undoing the mixing.
Is this the same as a backflush disc?
No. A backflush disc is a solid metal filter used for cleaning the group head. A blind shaker is a grounds distribution tool used during coffee preparation — completely different purpose.
Which grinders benefit most from blind shaking?
Single dose grinders like Niche Zero, DF64, Eureka Mignon, Baratza, Lagom, and Fellow Ode benefit most. These grinders produce variable output that shaking helps homogenize. But any grinder benefits — even conical burr grinders that produce more fines.
