The KNODOS Espresso WDT Tool is a precision coffee distribution tool with two sets of interchangeable stainless steel needles — 0.4mm for standard distribution and 0.25mm for ultra-fine declumping. Stir ground coffee inside the portafilter before tamping to break clumps and distribute grounds evenly for more uniform extraction and less channeling. The magnetic base holds the tool upright in any KNODOS tamping station. Works with any portafilter size — 51mm, 54mm, or 58mm.

What is a WDT Tool and Why It Matters

WDT stands for Weiss Distribution Technique — a method where you stir ground coffee inside the portafilter with thin needles before tamping. The needles break up clumps created by the grinder and distribute grounds evenly throughout the basket. Without WDT, clumps create dense spots in the puck that water cannot penetrate evenly. With WDT, the puck is uniform — and uniform pucks extract more evenly, taste better, and channel less.

Two Needle Sizes: 0.4mm and 0.25mm

The tool ships with two interchangeable needle heads. The 0.4mm needles handle everyday distribution — strong enough to break standard clumps without bending, and thin enough to move through the coffee bed without displacing too much. The 0.25mm needles are for ultra-fine work — light roasts ground fine for espresso, flat burr grinders that produce tightly packed fines, or any situation where the 0.4mm needles push clumps around instead of breaking them apart.

    Magnetic Base

The base of the WDT tool is magnetic. It snaps into the dedicated WDT slot on any KNODOS tamping station and holds upright between uses. When you are not using a KNODOS station, the magnetic base also sticks to any steel surface — the side of your grinder, the portafilter holder, or a metal shelf.

How to Use — Step by Step

    1. Grind your coffee into the portafilter basket.

    2. Lower the needle head into the grounds.

    3. Stir in small circles, working from the center outward and from the bottom upward.

    4. Break every visible clump and distribute grounds evenly across the basket.

    5. Lift the tool out and level the surface with a distributor or your finger.

    6. Tamp and extract.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use the 0.4mm needles vs the 0.25mm needles?

Use 0.4mm for most situations — medium and dark roasts, conical burr grinders, and coffee that clumps loosely. Use 0.25mm for light roasts, flat burr grinders, and any coffee that produces fine, tightly packed clumps. The thinner needles reach smaller clusters that the 0.4mm needles push around instead of breaking apart.

    Does WDT really improve espresso?

Yes. WDT is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost improvements you can make to your espresso routine. Breaking up clumps before tamping creates a more uniform puck, which extracts more evenly. Most users notice less channeling and better-tasting shots immediately after adding WDT to their workflow.

Can I use this with a dosing funnel?

Yes — and it is the recommended workflow. Place your dosing funnel on the portafilter, grind into the basket, then stir with the WDT tool while the funnel walls keep grounds contained. Lift the funnel off when done, then tamp.

Does the magnetic base fit all KNODOS tamping stations?

Yes. Every KNODOS tamping station (V3, Classic, and Knock Box combo) has a dedicated WDT slot. The magnetic base snaps into the slot and holds the tool upright.

How do I clean the needles?

Tap the needle head against the side of the portafilter or knock box to dislodge coffee. For deeper cleaning, rinse under water. The needles are stainless steel and do not corrode.
