Smaller 51mm baskets are more sensitive to uneven distribution than larger 58mm baskets — there is less surface area for water to spread naturally. An uneven bed in a small basket leads to faster, more pronounced channeling. A distributor compensates by leveling the grounds into a uniform surface before every tamp.
